In a recent conversation with two of our senior designers, Jerry Huang and Joe Dolack, that balance of optimism and skepticism was on full display.<\/p>\n<h2>The Everyday Magic of AI<\/h2>\n<p>Jerry was the first to chime in when I asked how AI is changing his design work. His answer was immediate: \u201cIt takes the grind out of the job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to the tools already built into Photoshop. Need a background removed? Done in seconds. Want to track motion or fix color corrections? AI now handles it faster and more accurately than ever. Tasks that once required painstaking repetition can now be completed in a click or two.<\/p>\n<p>Joe nodded along, adding his own favorite shortcut. \u201cIf I need a wide banner image but only have a tight photo, I can just expand the background with AI. Type in a quick prompt like \u2018continue the wall\u2019 and suddenly I\u2019ve got multiple options ready to drop into my layout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just about convenience\u2014it\u2019s about shifting focus. As Joe put it, \u201cInstead of getting bogged down in execution, we can focus more on creative direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Cutting Costs and Rethinking Video<\/h2>\n<p>The conversation quickly turned to video production, where the impact of AI feels even bigger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink about it,\u201d Joe said. \u201cA commercial once meant hiring actors, booking locations, renting cameras, and spending weeks in post-production. Now, with the right AI tools, you could generate a polished video with nothing more than a storyline and a few style choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jerry agreed, pointing out that what used to take three months can now be completed in a week. Post-production\u2014a stage once notorious for dragging on\u2014can be handled with a few style prompts: vintage film look, futuristic tones, saturated colors.<\/p>\n<p>The savings are undeniable. But both designers acknowledged that while AI can mimic style and speed up workflows, it can\u2019t fully capture the emotion or nuance of human storytelling. At least not yet.<\/p>\n<h2>Hybrid Creativity<\/h2>\n<p>So, will AI replace traditional production? Not entirely, our designers think.<\/p>\n<p>Joe envisions a hybrid model: \u201cAI handles the heavy lifting, but humans guide the vision.\u201d He sees marketing content especially benefiting from AI\u2019s speed and versatility, while big-budget films and deeply human stories will still rely on people to capture emotional truth.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry estimated AI might cut out about 30% of the repetitive work in video and graphic production\u2014but insisted that human oversight remains essential. \u201cMovies tell human stories,\u201d he reminded us. \u201cAI doesn\u2019t understand relationships or emotions the way we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Keeping the Creative Voice Intact<\/h2>\n<p>One of the trickiest parts of working with AI is making sure the results still reflect your vision. Both designers agreed it takes patience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to experiment,\u201d Joe said. \u201cSometimes the first result is nothing like what you pictured. But tweak the prompt, refine it, and often it gets surprisingly close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jerry described AI as a \u201cdesign partner\u201d that learns your preferences over time. The more you work with it, the more it aligns with your style\u2014almost like an assistant who gets better with experience.<\/p>\n<h2>The Ethical Dilemma<\/h2>\n<p>Of course, no discussion about AI in design would be complete without touching on the ethical questions it raises.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry was quick to bring up copyright. \u201cAI is trained on existing art\u2014without asking permission. That\u2019s a problem.\u201d He also noted the risk of fake content, from manipulated images to fabricated videos.<\/p>\n<p>Joe added the growing concern around deepfakes and the use of artists\u2019 work without credit or compensation. \u201cPeople are starting to push back,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the technology is evolving so fast, it\u2019s hard to regulate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both agreed that transparency, fair compensation, and thoughtful policies will be critical if AI is to move forward responsibly.<\/p>\n<h2>Looking Forward<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the challenges, neither designer sounded discouraged.<\/p>\n<p>Joe described the field as \u201cexciting and full of potential.\u201d He sees businesses racing to explore new ways to apply AI\u2014and believes staying curious and adaptable will be key.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry took a broader view. \u201cAI is going to touch every part of life\u2014government, education, entertainment. For us as designers, it\u2019s about learning to use it well. If we see AI as a helper, not a threat, it can help us overcome obstacles and open new opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The Bottom Line<\/h2>\n<p>AI isn\u2019t the enemy of creativity\u2014it\u2019s a new collaborator. It can speed up the boring parts, cut costs, and open doors to possibilities that once felt out of reach. But it also raises big questions about ownership, ethics, and what makes design truly human.<\/p>\n<p>As Jerry summed it up: \u201cAI is like an extra set of hands.
